Home-sourcing October 8, 2006

As you may already know, in this latest era of globalization, outsourcing and offshoring became the standard commercial and work practices used to reduce costs, gain time and improve profits for companies. I will not consider any example from abroad companies as here on our close neighborhood, a dozen of outsourcing companies emerged like worms in rotting cheese to enroll some if not all of our local graduates; call-centers and online helpdesks. I would lie uttering that am happy with it known the wages, conditions and facilities that home employees benefit of and we not. However, it is a good opportunity for new graduate, unemployed and students to gain professional experience, to make money and then aim at better job later. This is not the point of my post. I will not go through the merits and demerits of outsourcing or offshoring. May be in another post!

Many companies are actually orienting and re-working their activities based a new US tailor-made concept to literally embarrass a substitute or alternative to the standard outsoucing/offshore practice. This pretty new concept (90th) is based on moving work from the enterprise offices to home. Yes, you are home, well sited on your armchair, the fridge few feet away, you’re tasting your hot cup of coffee, adjusting the stereo volume while pressing the on/off laptop button. It’s a new home working day. Lucky you! What could be better? No boss hassle, no boring meetings, time free, what u need to care of are just the job results and the work reports. It doesn’t matter; you manage time as u wish. You’re the local PM, so enjoy it. You’re feeling good; you’re more productive and extremely efficient. That’s in fact what pushed companies to adopt this new concept. It is not just about money as home agents are less costly for the company.  In fact, when workers are happy, (we believe you are when home) they better do their job, the quality of servicing improves and so the productivity and efficiency. This new practice lead to many successful experiences and here below I listed the most soundness:
– Almost 100,000 or 70 percent of Hewlett-Packard Co.’s employees work from home part of the time.
– AT&T Corp.reported that last year it “received over $180 million in operating benefit from telework”
– Jetblue Airline Company has 700 reservation agents working from home.
– In 2004, it was reported that 16% of the American Labor was Home based.
Home-sourcing may be critical for us as it could be an alternative for call-centers. Foreigners’ companies would go outsourcing back home. I believe it would not on any way affect us.  However, I’m thinking how we would adopt this concept in our county. I believe the number of qualified moms and jobless is big enough to really think about this prospect. If we can come with ideas to mobilize this working force, we will create big opportunities and consequent benefits and outcomes. I thought we way create a network of skilled people who would love working home and are ready for outsourcing. It would be like a website referencing these peoples as per their locations and skills, so companies can refer to them for specific assignments, when they do working home. It may be for the coming future. For the time being, I’am think about how I may convince my boss letting me work home or definitely settle abroad. What I would need is a laptop, a decent dsl connection (no less than 1MG), an international phone line with enough credit and a 3 months valid plane tickets. It would be enough.

Well…working at home is definitely a good idea…however i enjoy going to the office too sometimes…i meet some nice people there (it’s chance to work with nice people) and i have some company that i wouldn’t have when i’m home. i’m wondering if the home-sourcing will work in our country or not. There are some companies in which you have taks to do and your boss doesn’t care when you come or leave…as long as your job is done and well done in time…and there other companies in which you have to be there from 8h15 to 18H30 or more, depending on the work you have…and if you don’t have much to do, you can’t leave earlier…my boss would certainly not agree of letting us work at home…

tell us more about the reaction of our boss once you ask him about this.
